US Army WW2 trucks, tractors and semi-trailers, by Didier Andres.

In the late 1930s, two major schools of thought clashed within the United States Army, which had embarked on a profound restructuring of its units and vehicle fleet. In the field of logistical support, the advocates of the trailer and semi-trailer concept championed a physical separation between the mechanical drivetrain of the conventional truck and the rear load-carrying section, which received supplies or specialised equipment.

The second school of thought advocated compact, inseparable combinations, for reasons of time-saving and responsiveness in the field. Ultimately, both types of vehicles were ordered during the Second World War: complete trucks destined for the front and its immediate rear areas, while the lines of communication and the staging zones were the domain of tractors and semi-trailers.

It is this second category — encompassing numerous items of specialised equipment for the railway corps, quartermaster, cavalry, engineers and aviation — that is studied here in French for the first time by the author.
