Exhausted by the crossing and struck by seasickness, the assault troops were nonetheless convinced that the German defences had been crushed by naval and aerial bombardment. Across the water, entrenched in the coastal fortifications they had still been improving just the day before, German infantrymen waited for the American soldiers to reach the shoreline before opening fire.
