Everyone knows the iconic images of D-Day: American paratroopers dropped on Sainte-Mère-Église, the bloodbath at Omaha Beach, the heroic capture of Pointe du Hoc, and the landing of the 177 French commandos at Ouistreham.


It is easy to forget that in the middle of this front there lies a sector, Gold Beach, where the Allied offensive proved particularly effective — to the point that the 25,000 British troops who came ashore on the beaches of Asnelles and Ver-sur-Mer had achieved most of their objectives by the evening of 6 June, including control of the Caen–Bayeux axis, and had liberated Bayeux the very next day.


But Gold Beach also stands for the extraordinary technological feat of constructing the artificial harbour at Arromanches and converting Port-en-Bessin into a fuel port to supply the entire Allied armada. And it was in the Gold Beach sector that Sergeant Stan Hollis received, in recognition of his acts of bravery, the only Victoria Cross (Britain's most prestigious decoration) awarded in Normandy.
It is for all these reasons that the British government chose Gold Beach, and more precisely the commune of Ver-sur-Mer, as the site of a Memorial bearing the names of some 21,000 soldiers of the United Kingdom killed on D-Day or during the Battle of Normandy.


A book was therefore needed to restore Gold Beach to its rightful place in history among the five D-Day landing beaches. Drawing on the exceptional documentation gathered over more than half a century by Philippe Bauduin — a recognised specialist of D-Day and a native of Ver-sur-Mer — this richly illustrated work recalls the strategic stakes of this key sector on D-Day and recounts the events that unfolded there, as seen through the eyes of those who took part.

Following the success of D-Day, What They Didn't Tell You: The Secrets of the Landings, published in 2016, Philippe Bauduin and Jean-Charles Stasi continue their collaboration with this new work dedicated to 6 June 1944.
