Created at the time of Operation "Fall Blau" in the late spring of 1942, the III. Panzerkorps served until the end of the war exclusively on the Eastern Front and became one of the spearheads of virtually all the major offensive and defensive operations conducted by the Wehrmacht.

Throughout its campaign, it brought together various Panzer-Divisionen, as well as Axis units such as the 2. Rumänische Gebirgs-Division.

This formation distinguished itself from the steppes of the Caucasus in 1942 to the plains of Kursk and Kharkov in 1943, through the Cherkassy Pocket in February 1944, and during its brilliant defense of Debrecen in the autumn of that same year. In March 1945, it was still engaged during Germany's final offensive in Hungary.

Through its engagements, the III. Panzerkorps stands as one of the most emblematic units of the Wehrmacht, and its name is associated with the man who was its commander for a very long time: General der Panzertruppe Hermann Breith.
