This work is the only one in French recounting the history of the 36th Infantry Division of the United States Army, from its creation to the present day. This major unit, nicknamed the "Texas Division", took part in the First World War. Between the wars, it reverted to a reserve formation within the Texas National Guard. Reactivated in 1941, it fought throughout the Second World War, in Sicily and then in Italy, where it distinguished itself.

Having landed in Provence on 15 August 1944 and then attached to Task Force Butler, it played a crucial role in disrupting the retreat of the German 19th Army in the Rhône valley. The 36th took an active part in the Vosges and Alsace campaign during the winter of 1944–1945, through to the capitulation of Germany.

The history of this division is linked to works already published by Histoire & Collections on the 1st and 45th Divisions of the US Army, the Battle of Montélimar, and the 11th Panzer Division, which it faced on several occasions.
