For Berliet, the early 1960s were rich in symbolic significance. Indeed, this period saw the beginning of the Common Market and the lifting of customs barriers, intended to open up access to the German, Italian, Belgian and Dutch markets. The brand with the locomotive emblem built the structures needed to position itself favourably in the face of these new outlets and developed specific vehicles adapted to the requirements of the new markets.

In parallel, Berliet maintained its export efforts, notably in sub-Saharan Africa, the Maghreb, Cuba and the People's Republic of China. Finally, the Vénissieux manufacturer pursued an intensive renewal policy for its French range in order to maintain its positions against traditional competitors such as Saviem and Unic, as well as new and aggressive competitors from Germany, Italy and Great Britain.

The period 1961–1963 is that of the unveiling of the Relaxe M3 bonnet cab, which carries the weight of a symbol, as it was this model that would make the brand known — or reinforce its image — to the four corners of the world. These years, rich in events and innovations, are what this work invites you to discover.
