The GLR is more than a truck — it is a symbol. First and foremost the symbol of a marque, for while the manufacturer with the locomotive badge produced more than a thousand different models, the GLR is by far the most emblematic, the most famous and the best-selling. The GLR is the essence of Berliet, concentrating all the qualities of the marque's trucks: robustness, reliability, longevity and economy.

The GLR is also the symbol of an era — that of the Trente Glorieuses. It is equally the symbol of France's industrial dynamism. Produced in a total of nearly 100,000 units together with the TLR tractor, it was widely exported, primarily to emerging countries but not exclusively. Finally, the GLR embodies a state of mind oriented towards customer satisfaction, through the supply of quality, high-performance and economical-to-use equipment, as well as unfailing service.

This work aims to give an overview of the vehicle, its history, its manufacturer and the men who designed it, and also to explain why it became an icon of the industrial vehicle world, in France and abroad, justifying its status as "truck of the century", awarded in 1994 by a vote organised by the magazine Les Routiers…
