All Axis member countries used a large number of sidearms throughout the conflict. The majority of these were standard-issue weapons, manufactured locally or purchased abroad, as well as weapons acquired from neutral countries such as Spain.

Finally, territorial conquests made it possible to requisition the production apparatus of the vanquished and seize their weapons. The Axis forces would thus use some five million sidearms up to 1945.
