This work is a reissue of a study published in 1872 by infantry lieutenant-colonel Jean Capdevielle, already under the same title: L'armement et le tir de l'infanterie, but originally published in two separate parts, one containing the text, the other bringing together in an "Atlas" a collection of plates and tables.

This new edition not only reunites the two volumes but also inserts the engravings into the text, making for a far more enjoyable read.

The largely technical explanations and descriptions are thereby made considerably easier to follow. This study on marksmanship and weaponry is divided into three parts:

1° Ballistics theory: theoretical trajectory, causes of irregularity, experimental trajectory, range estimation;

2° The general characteristics of modern weapons and a description of weapons in service;

3° Practical marksmanship. Beyond the detailed and illustrated description of numerous weapons, Capdevielle extends the discussion to the weapons known in his time, comparing them with one another and with French weapons, presenting both their qualities and their shortcomings.

Capdevielle's study is highly comprehensive and remarkably well documented.
