More than fifty years after Joseph-Désiré Mobutu's rise to power in the Congo, it is time to take a clear-eyed look at that era and to try to understand the role of each party — and especially of the mercenaries — in this page of history of which only the scattered ashes of memory will remain.

Drawing on their lived experiences and official documents, the author, assisted by several Belgian protagonists, wrote this book to provide younger generations and historians with a solid and credible document on what really happened. Above all, he sought to give the lie to Rudyard Kipling's famous remark: « The first casualty of war is always the truth. »

The author, Henri Clément, completed his military service as a sous-lieutenant in the 9e Régiment de Chasseurs Parachutistes. After working as a freelance photojournalist for Paris-Match, he joined Bob Denard in the Congo. He left the country in March 1967 and subsequently worked for several French public works companies.

While many works have covered the early days of Congolese independence, the failure of Katangan independence and the assassination of Patrice Lumumba, virtually nothing had been written about events from General Mobutu's seizure of power to the end of the mercenaries — that is, from July 1965 to July 1968.

This book is a synthesis of the various political and military actions that overlapped in the greatest disorder. But above all, it is the story of the mercenaries who spent three years attempting to restore some semblance of order in a country utterly torn apart. Thanks to them, Mobutu was able to seize power with the active complicity of the United States and the CIA.

When the " Affreux ", for multiple reasons of domestic and pan-African politics, became expendable, a solution had to be found to be rid of them.

Here is their story, abundantly illustrated with largely unpublished photographs and maps to situate all the operations in this country in flames. To write this work, author Henri Clément consulted all available archives and gathered the testimonies of former mercenaries and settlers who had until now kept their silence.
