In April 1961, Colonel de La Chapelle commanded the famous 1er régiment étranger de cavalerie. Convinced that "there are things that simply are not done", he chose to commit his unit to the Algiers putsch.

This courageous officer began his career at the age of 20 as a simple soldier. During the twenty-seven years in which he would serve France under arms, Gilbert de la Chapelle was involved in every war in which his country was engaged: the campaign of France (1940), the fratricidal war in Syria (1941), the gruelling Tunisia campaign (1943) and the liberation of France (1944–45). He departed for Indochina in 1951, distinguishing himself at the head of an amphibious group for two years before serving one year on the staff of the supreme command, including during the Battle of Dien Bien Phu. After a first tour in Algeria, he was entrusted with the command of the 1er REC in 1960.

These memoirs cast an original light on the storms of History that the French army weathered throughout the 20th century, as experienced by an officer untouched by passion. His testimony, previously unpublished, was recorded by General Lalanne Berdouticq in 1995 on audio cassettes. It proves exceptional, bringing to the historical record many clarifications on events that are sometimes little known.

Author: General (2S) Alexandre Lalanne Berdouticq, a Saint-Cyr graduate and a holder of the brevet from the École supérieure de guerre, served principally in mountain troops and the Foreign Legion, of which he commanded an infantry regiment. Also an instructor at Saint-Cyr and the École de guerre, he served in Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Middle East and Sahelian Africa. He now teaches geopolitics and writes articles and novels.
