The terrifying sound of its sirens (the famous "Trumpets of Jericho"), the perfect coordination of its attacks with the Panzers, and the deadly precision of its strikes are inseparable from the early successes of the Blitzkrieg in 1939 and 1940, before the Battle of Britain revealed its limitations: the Junkers Ju 87 Stuka is unquestionably one of the great stars of Nazi propaganda during those years of triumphant victories.

Revived by the invasion of the Balkans and then of the USSR, the Ju 87 enjoyed a second life as a tank hunter on the Eastern Front under the command of the celebrated ace Hans-Ulrich Rudel, but it was definitively superseded by the Fw 190 in 1944.

A leading specialist in ground-attack aviation of the Second World War, Herbert Léonard revisits the story of this exceptional aircraft, the Stuka, as well as all the dive bombers studied by the Luftwaffe during the war up to 1945, including projects that never progressed beyond the drawing board.
