When on 26 November 1941 the six aircraft carriers of the Kidō Butai secretly left the anchorage of Hito-Kappu in the Kuril Islands and set course for Pearl Harbor, they embarked approximately 380 aircraft: dive bombers, torpedo bombers and fighters.

All of them, in their respective categories, represented the best available in single-engine combat aircraft at the time. The fighters were of the Mitsubishi A6M2 Reisen or Zero type, the first having entered service barely a year earlier.

As the Pacific War was about to begin, the Zero entered a period that was admittedly brief (barely a few months) but during which it forged a legend that few aircraft in the history of aviation can claim to have achieved.

It is to a description of this near-mythical aircraft that this work devotes itself, constituting a first volume; a second will be dedicated to its rich operational career.
