Made famous by the films Apocalypse Now, Platoon and We Were Soldiers, the Huey was the true workhorse of the U.S. Army throughout the Cold War. The product of a mid-1950s research programme for a helicopter heavier and more robust than those previously fielded by the U.S. Army, the first examples entered service in the United States at the beginning of the 1960s.

This helicopter, originally intended for medical evacuations, proved so robust that Washington decided to adapt it into several variants, while the USMC and the U.S. Air Force in turn chose to order examples of the Bell-built aircraft.

But it was during the Vietnam War that the "Huey" had its baptism of fire… and entered legend. Serving in turn as a transport helicopter, a medevac aircraft, a ground-attack platform (with its rocket pods) and a fire support platform (with M60 machine guns in the door), the "Huey" emerged from the Vietnam War wreathed in glory and was exported to more than ten countries in some thirty different variants.
