In this 120-page work, Benjamin Gravisse provides a comprehensive overview of the development of the Kirov class, before presenting all its technical equipment and armaments, then detailing the operational history of each vessel. This softcover book is richly illustrated with photographs and plans as well as 3D views of the Kirov (renamed Admiral Ushakov in 1992) in its 1980 configuration.

Following a first work on Russian Slava-class cruisers published in the spring, Benjamin Gravisse, author of the blog redsamovar.com and a recognised expert on Soviet and Russian military equipment, turns his attention to "something even bigger". During the Cold War, the Kirov-class cruisers (or Project 1144) were among the largest and most powerful surface vessels in service anywhere in the world, designed to confront NATO aircraft carriers. Only four of these easily recognisable steel giants were built before the collapse of the USSR, and two examples remain in active service today (one of which is currently undergoing modernisation).
