On 14 April 2022, the Russian guided-missile cruiser Moskva was sunk in the Black Sea by Ukrainian R-360 Neptune missiles fired from the coast.

It was then the largest warship sunk in combat since the Second World War, exceeding by a small margin — both in displacement and length — the Argentine General Belgrano torpedoed during the Falklands War.

Flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, the Moskva belonged to the Slava class, or Project 1164 Atlant, designed in Soviet times to carry large anti-ship missiles with the primary mission of sinking American aircraft carriers. Of the seven units planned, four were launched after many setbacks and delays, and only three entered service. Currently, two modernized units remain in active service.
