Edward III's chevauchée broke before Reims, the City of Coronations.

In 1359, Edward III of England held John II the Good prisoner after his crushing defeat at Poitiers (1356). France was slow to pay the enormous ransom for its sovereign. Weary of waiting, Edward decided to mount an expedition to have himself crowned King of France at Reims.

The City of Coronations resisted him, forcing him to return to England after a chevauchée through northern Burgundy and the Paris Basin. Despite the Black Monday storm, which saw part of the English army perish, the campaign ended with the signing of the Treaty of Brétigny, which awarded a vast territory to Edward.
