When asked about the 501e RCC, General Leclerc replied: "The 501st has never let me down." This illustrates the close ties that existed between the 2e DB and the "501st" — the only armoured regiment of Free France and Companion of the Liberation. Its participation in the liberation of France is not the regiment's only distinguishing feature. Established in 1918, it was the "first of the armoured units" and took part in every battle of the final phase of the Great War.

From 1918 to 1945, from the plains of Champagne and Flanders to the Eagle's Nest, the men of the 501st perpetuated the spirit of the armoured corps and of Free France. Colonel (ret.) Pesqueur, former commanding officer of the 501st, retraces the history of this regiment.
