In early 1933, Adolf Hitler asked Josef Dietrich to form a close protection unit responsible for his security. Progressively militarised, the « Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler » took part in the Polish campaign in 1939 and the conquest of France, before being committed to Operation « Barbarossa ».

Reorganised as a Panzergrenadier-Division in 1942 and then as an SS-Panzer-Division, it fought hard against the Red Army and repeatedly distinguished itself in combat — as at the Battle of Kharkiv — while seeing the emergence of Panzertruppen aces such as Michael Wittmann, a Tiger tank commander.

Fighting on every front from 1943, from Italy to France and Hungary, its last Panzers surrendered to the Americans on 2 May 1945, after being defeated by the Soviets.

Illustrated with previously unpublished photographs and colour profiles, this new volume in the « Archives de Guerre » collection traces the military history of the « Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler » — including its war crimes — throughout the Second World War.
