Starting from the nucleus of the 117 men who formed the Stabswache in 1933, the Leibstandarte, Hitler's personal bodyguard, would become an elite motorised regiment, then a brigade and a division. It distinguished itself in Poland, in the West, and gained its first military renown in the Balkans, where Kurt Meyer in particular excelled. Then came the fighting on the Eastern Front, spearheading astonishing victories. From 1943 onwards, it continued to take part in major battles, at Kharkov and at Kursk. It subsequently disarmed the Italian army, fought in Normandy, in the Ardennes, and then in the final battles in Hungary and even in Berlin for some of its elements. This military history is accompanied by portraits of officers who became famous, as well as photographs of equipment. A historic document of lasting significance, issued in a limited print run, to be placed in every good library.
