This evasive reply, written by Michel Audiard for Jean Gabin in Sous le signe du taureau (Gilles Grangier, 1969), is telling. It all began with a call-up in autumn 1939 at the naval base in Cherbourg. This was followed by a flight to the United States, a romance with the legendary Marlène Dietrich interspersed with film shoots, a memorable battle off the coast of North Africa, a role as an instructor and then as a tank commander in the glorious Leclerc Division… A journey that would end at the summit of the Obersalzberg, Hitler's Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden. A story worthy of the finest Hollywood screenplays — and yet entirely true.

This book, prefaced by Mathias Moncorgé, Jean Gabin's son, invites you to revisit an incredible adventure, illustrated with numerous documents — often unpublished — drawn from the collections of the actor's family and the archives of the Jean-Gabin Museum in Mériel.
