Placed in service by the Wehrmacht between 1942 and 1945, the Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger I is a German heavy tank and one of the most iconic fighting vehicles of the Second World War. Feared by Allied forces for its powerful 88 mm gun and thick armour, the Tiger I was deployed on every front and took part in every major battle.

In this book, David Fletcher and David Willey trace the history of this armoured vehicle, focusing on its development and production as well as the role it played during the Second World War. The work centres on Tiger "131" at the Tank Museum in Bovington, United Kingdom — the only Tiger I in the world to have been restored to running order.

Using this example, the authors describe in precise detail the conditions of acquisition, custody and operation of this formidable fighting machine. They also cover the recent complete dismantling and reconstruction of Tiger "131" and its Maybach engine. This unique account of the Tiger's maintenance and operation is illustrated by an abundance of photographs and texts prepared by a team of Tank Museum specialists.

The book also draws on the testimonies and recollections of German crews who took this tank into battle. Military history specialist David Fletcher is the author of further works on heavy tanks, including Mark V Tank and Sherman Firefly.
