Volume 1 - 15 to 25 August 1944

 The events of the liberation of Paris are well known. Those of the Grand West at the arrival of the Allies in the Île-de-France are far less so.

On 17 August, Field Marshal Model, the new commander of the Western armies, passed through Paris to organise the defence of Greater Paris with General von Choltitz. Orders were given to assemble combat forces to face the Americans who had reached Chartres and Dreux.

From 18 to 25 August, German combat groups were hastily formed and directed towards Rambouillet, Montfort-l'Amaury, Houdan, Mantes, Maule, and Bonnières. Mission: to block the road to Paris along the RN 12 and RN 13, and to push back the American bridgehead on the Seine at Mantes.

For the inhabitants of the villages between the Seine and the Mauldre, the departure of the occupation troops and the arrival of American spearheads had led them to believe they could celebrate the Liberation. But the German counter-offensive was to postpone the celebrations and sow consternation. Failing before Épône and Pontchartrain, the German resurgence would generate a week of fighting and uncertainty.
