The overbearing presence of the Grand Headquarters West with Field Marshal von Rundstedt, but also the Feldgendarmerie and its French auxiliaries; the SD, the security service or Gestapo. Political collaboration, the R.N.P., the Francisme movement, volunteers of the LVF and the Waffen-SS. Saint-Germain-en-Laye, arguably the most "occupied" town in France, settled into a kind of forced cohabitation that bred compromise.

Some of the darkest fates of this period were sealed here, caught between loyalty to the Pétain regime, a certain idea of France, and the Resistance, in the face of the crushing grip of the Reich.

In short, the "dark side" of the Occupation. The time for history has come. This account will take us on a tour of the arrondissement of Saint-Germain, to Maisons-Laffitte where the headquarters of the S.D. — the German security police — was located, and to Rueil-Malmaison, Poissy, Le Pecq, Chatou, Le Vésinet, Houilles, Sartrouville....
