Facts, previously unpublished testimonies, troubled destinies — all bound together by the pervasive German presence in every aspect of society. Did the relative mildness of the occupation of this royal city encourage compromise? Some of the most terrible fates of this period were shaped here, between loyalty to Pétain, a drift towards collaboration, and the belief, held by some, that they could defend a certain idea of France within the crushing framework of the Reich.
Was the Second World War born at Versailles, following the 1919 treaty that dismantled the Kaiser's Germany? Some have not hesitated to write: "Hitler, born at Versailles…"
Through this chronology we will discover the fates of certain individuals who distinguished themselves — some with honour, others through betrayal. In the final section, we follow the events of the Liberation battles and then the period known as the Épuration, during which dozens of Versailles residents would be called to "account" before exceptional tribunals.
