What cyclist riding through the salt marshes around Loix, or what summer visitor swimming at the Pointe des Sablanceaux, suspects that these peaceful places witnessed bloody clashes during an attempted conquest of the Île de Ré in 1627? That year, in the aftermath of the Wars of Religion, the kingdom of Louis XIII was attempting to recover some semblance of peace. Yet the city of La Rochelle remained under the close watch of the royal army and its Fort Louis. Irritated by this threat, the Huguenot leader Benjamin de Soubise managed to persuade England to come to the aid of the capital of Protestantism. The celebrated Duke of Buckingham was appointed to command the expedition. With no clear objective and poorly received by the people of La Rochelle, the Englishman decided to seize the Île de Ré. What followed were fighting and more than three months of siege of the fort of Saint-Martin, defended by Jean de Toiras. Drawing on archives, correspondence, journals and French and English accounts, this work sheds light on this little-known episode that would lead to Richelieu's Great Siege of La Rochelle.
