When Bonaparte left Egypt, he handed command to Kléber. The latter attempted to negotiate with the British and the Ottomans the return of the Army of the Orient to France, but the massacre of the garrison at El-Arish brought the negotiations to an end. On 20 March 1800, the French soldiers confronted and defeated the Ottoman army of Youssef Pasha amid the ruins of Heliopolis. They then had to conduct a siege of nearly one month to reoccupy Cairo, which had risen in rebellion. After this engagement, Egypt entered a period of peace that would be shattered by the assassination of Kléber by a Muslim fanatic and his replacement by the inadequate General Menou.
