Every summer, the Blancs-Sablons beach at Le Conquet draws thousands of tourists in search of fresh air and invigorating bathing. How many know that five centuries ago, a fierce naval battle was fought off that beach, between English sailors and French and Breton sailors? And that the reddened waters of the Iroise Sea washed dozens of corpses onto the fine sand of that cove? Guy Le Moing takes us to Le Conquet, to Brest and along the coasts of Brittany, but also far beyond, through early sixteenth-century Europe where the France of Louis XII and the England of Henry VIII are locked in conflict. This work also sheds light on a thoroughly neglected subject: the navy of the Renaissance.
