DIXMUDE - 19 October – 10 November 1914 - Sailors and Belgians Defend the Yser
On 19 October, the French Navy commemorates the day of the naval fusiliers. This date corresponds roughly to the start of the Battle of Dixmude, which raged from mid-October (the first skirmishes took place on the 16th) to 10 November 1914.
The naval fusiliers brigade distinguished itself during these particularly bloody engagements. They thus became the founding ordeal of the naval fusiliers corps, as Camerone was for the Foreign Legion or Bazeille for the marine infantry. Yet the sometimes desperate defence of the small Flemish town in Belgium against the assaults of the infantry and Jägers of the XXII Reserve Corps of the German Army was not achieved by the fusiliers alone: Belgian line infantry and artillerymen, French chasseurs à pied and Senegalese tirailleurs distinguished themselves equally under the command of Rear Admiral Alexis Ronarc'h.
This work aims to present the course of the Battle of Dixmude within the broader strategic context of the Belgian campaign and the Battle of the Yser, of which it constitutes one of the most salient episodes. It attempts to do justice to the suffering and courage of all combatants without falling into the gilded legend that long surrounded Dixmude.
