A small unit of six German heavy tanks — the famous Tigers of s.SS-Panzer-Abteilung 101, commanded by Obersturmführer Michael Wittmann — was stationed nearby and about to intervene…

Yann Jouault and Frédéric Deprun undertook a thorough and extremely detailed study of the fighting on that fateful day — an autopsy of the battle made possible by testimonies and previously unpublished photographs that have come to light over the past decade.


It became essential for the authors to pursue this research and to establish, precisely and without compromise, a chronology of events — from the breakthrough of the 7th Armoured Division to Wittmann's attack, through to the destruction of the last Tiger of SS-Panzer-Abteilung 101 in the village. The study, divided into two parts — Wittmann's Last Victory and The Defeat of the Tigers — invites a better understanding of the facts by freeing the subject from its persistent myths and legends.
