Henry I Beauclerc, King of England and Duke of Normandy, sought to subdue his barons in rebellion against his authority and to consolidate his power over the "Marches" of his Duchy. His powerful neighbour, King Louis VI the Fat of France, also attempted to extend his tiny royal domain of Île-de-France. At the still ill-defined borders of the two principalities, the Vexin and the Seine valley were coveted by both sides. In 1119, the two princes and their armies found themselves, almost by chance, face to face at Brémule.
