A mythical figure of the Grande Armée's cavalry, Count Antoine-Charles-Louis de Lasalle fascinated generations of light cavalrymen the world over. Yet this inveterate drinker, gambler, swordsman and extravagant lover seems to have fallen victim to his own legend.

Drawing on the analysis of previously unpublished archival documents, this book offers, through an innovative approach, a broadening of perspectives by demonstrating the contribution and legacy of a man who can be considered one of the finest light cavalry generals of the Empire and indeed of his century.

Lasalle's pivotal contribution to the evolution of light cavalry tactics and identity, as well as the immortalisation of his figure and his feats of arms by painters and sculptors both during his lifetime and after his death, reveal a rich and complex personality who left a powerful and lasting mark on military history and, in his own way, on the history of art.
