Switzerland had established at a very early stage "a true industry of mercenary soldiering". Each canton had the ability, through capitulation agreements, to recruit military units with their own officers and regulations on behalf of a neighbouring state.


The French Revolution would come up against the loyalty of the Swiss to the King of France. The tragic events of the massacre of the Swiss Guard on 10 August 1792 at the Tuileries stand as the bloodiest example. Subsequently, the Swiss regiments of the Line infantry were disbanded.


France between 1793 and 1813, in the process of reorganising Europe, would transform Switzerland, which provided — not always under the best conditions — troops of great value to its neighbour during the Revolution and the Empire.


This work sets out to present the Swiss troops who served the Royalty, the Republic, the Consulate, the Empire and the Second Empire. The some 70 plates drawn by André Jouineau and annotated by Jean-Marie Mongin present, primarily, the foot troops in the service of France from the Ancien Régime through to the birth of the short-lived regiment of the Foreign Legion composed essentially of Swiss soldiers.
