The 8th Air Force 1942–1945
The 8th Air Force was the first strategic air force of the US Army Air Forces (USAAF) to be established during the Second World War.
By mid-1944, two years after its creation, it had assembled more than 200,000 men at its bases in Great Britain and was capable of deploying for a single operation more than 2,000 four-engine bombers protected by 1,000 fighter aircraft. Its primary role was to support the Allied landings on the continent, notably through massive daylight raids designed to disrupt the Nazi production apparatus and communications networks, both in Germany and in the Western European territories then occupied by it.
This volume of over 200 pages traces, through more than 350 colour profiles and several dozen period photographs, the history of the "Mighty Eighth" in Europe from 1942 to 1945, with detailed coverage of the various bombardment and fighter units, as well as reconnaissance and liaison units, including their aircraft, insignia and specific codes.
