By mid-1944 it had assembled on its bases in Great Britain more than 200,000 men and was capable of deploying, for a single operation, over 2,000 four-engine bombers escorted by 1,000 fighter aircraft. Its primary role was to support the Allied landings on the Continent, notably through massive daylight raids designed to disrupt the Nazi production apparatus and communications networks, both in Germany and in the territories it then occupied.
