At the American cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach, on the vast map engraved in stone, red ceramic stars mark the Allied bombing raids. Foreign visitors do not appreciate what these stars symbolize for the French: pain, tragedy, and sometimes incomprehension.

How do you wage war against friends?

Time has moved on, consigning to oblivion the suffering of the French under Allied bombs; History will remember from this deluge — which claimed tens of thousands of civilian lives — only the liberation. « It was the price to pay for our freedom. » Did a young mother finding her child dead beneath a collapsed wall think of freedom then?

This book reviews the French towns that suffered from these fratricidal bombings, their perpetrators, their motivations and their machines. It is an act of remembrance for our civilian compatriots, more than 60,000 of whom perished at the hands of the Allies.
