One is struck both by the number of aircraft lost (58,481) and by the scale of aiming errors… Nearly 600,000 tonnes of bombs were dropped by British and American air forces on more than 1,570 French localities between June 1940 and May 1945. More than 90,000 buildings or houses were destroyed and 45,000 rendered uninhabitable.

Eddy Florentin does not omit to examine the issues of conscience facing Allied command, the reactions of the population, and the networks for sheltering and exfiltrating Allied airmen. One may wonder that Eddy Florentin should be the first to recount and catalogue in so exhaustive a manner these tragedies that bloodied so many towns and villages.
