From the summer of 1940, the organisation of food supply became one of the Vichy regime's top priorities. Beyond being a response to shortages, rationing was embedded in a particular ideological context: it was presented as one of the many sacrifices required to rebuild France in the wake of defeat. The introduction of the food ration card became the most tangible sign of wartime change for the civilian population. This "food identity card" entitled its holder to a set of coupons or tickets authorising the purchase of certain goods in quantities that varied according to age and occupation. From that point on, and for a long time to come, no act of purchase could be taken for granted.
