Who exactly was this black angel of the Gestapo in Normandy? Marie-Clotilde de Combiens, a young woman of 22 in 1943, made a name for herself by becoming the mistress of the head of the Sipo-SD branch in Caen, Harald Heyns alias Bernard.

Having found each other on a train between Paris and Cherbourg, Marie-Clotilde and Bernard would complement one another in terrorising first the people of Caen, then those of the Calvados for several months, sending some of them to the death camps.

Having studied collaboration in Caen and the Calvados for over thirty years, Yves Lecouturier has crossed paths with this figure on numerous occasions. Why did the Occupation lead this young woman into such a spiral? Had she been content with horizontal collaboration, her name would never have entered the history books. At most, she might have risked having her head shaved at the Liberation or received a sentence of national indignity!

But Marie-Clotilde, wishing to display her newfound power, turned to denunciation, sending some of her compatriots to the death camps — sometimes with the complicity of her own family. The Combiens family utterly discredited itself through a shameless collaboration with the occupier.

This work attempts to trace the path of Marie-Clotilde de Combiens, born of her father's ancillary affairs, and to explain the reasons that led her to become a bearer of death, acting solely out of self-interest and greed.
