The elimination of collaborators by the Resistance, outside any judicial framework, between 1943 and 1946 in Normandy

Spread over three years, from 1943 to 1946, the so-called wild purge claimed around a hundred victims in Normandy. This figure must be set against the legal purge carried out between 1944 and 1947: 39 individuals were shot after being sentenced to death by a court of justice. As early as 1943, certain members of the Resistance could not wait for the restoration of the Republic and began eliminating collaborators they considered dangerous to the Resistance. Decided outside any legal framework — or sometimes following a mockery of a trial — the extra-judicial purge was carried out swiftly and with violence, taking on a cathartic dimension exemplified by the shaving of women's heads. In Normandy, the so-called wild purge was relatively restrained, as the new French authorities were determined at all costs to prevent a civil war among Frenchmen.
