Across France, more than 500,000 hectares of land had been mined during the Second World War. Nearly 6 million mines were laid on Field Marshal Rommel's orders as part of the Atlantic Wall alone, to defend the French beaches against invasion.

The Normandy coastline proved severely affected by this "mine warfare."

With Liberation came the time for reconstruction… and for mine clearance. From October 1944 onwards, the French authorities decided to put German prisoners of war to work clearing the numerous minefields that were paralysing the country. Presented by the Allies as both a punishment and a means of redemption, this dangerous work would, it seems, never truly come to an end.
