The "American wire mesh" was there, beneath the wheels of aircraft landing on the temporary airstrips laid down by the Allies after June 1944; and it is still there, before our eyes, salvaged, reused and repurposed by the Normans. Where did this mesh come from, in what directions did it spread, how, when, by whom, how far, why, and what remains of it? The answers are in this volume, illustrated with archival and contemporary images and period documents.
