This volume traces in images the epic story of the 101st Airborne Division during its first combat jump in history.

This fourth volume in the Carentan series — conceived as a monumental fresco in ten volumes (more than 3,000 pages and 4,000 photographs) — takes you into the very first hours of D-Day, around drop zone C, at Sainte-Marie-du-Mont and Hiesville, where the division's command posts were established.

Each photograph is a fragment of history. The majority of the images published here are precisely located and identified — a feat made possible by more than thirty years of intensive research. The rigorous identification of places, men and units brings these moments, frozen in the chaos of the landings, back to life.

This exceptional volume brings together several major collections of period photographs, assembled to form what is arguably today the most impressive collection in the world devoted to the 101st Airborne in Normandy. This unique work is the result of the collaboration between Mark Bando, the pre-eminent American historian of the division, and Emmanuel Allain & Michel De Trez, founders of the D-Day Experience Museum.
