PANZERWAFFE Vol. 2 – The Time of Victories
From autumn 1939 (Poland) to summer 1940 (France), the Panzers swept from victory to victory, crushing all resistance in their path. German propaganda and its most celebrated generals narrated these moments of martial glory as a military promenade, even denying the defeated the recognition of their valiant sacrifices.
Unit archives and Berlin bureau records lift the veil on a chapter of history that was deliberately obscured. The Panzers had a baptism of fire in Poland, sustaining 30% losses — technical details that generals, initially sceptical about the Panzers' potential, chose to ignore in the euphoria of the moment.
Combining the dual perspective of historian and engineer, the author offers a new key to understanding these early German successes. Having described the tactical functioning of German armoured units in the first volume, Hugues Wenkin makes intelligible the thousands of pages of German documents that had until then remained opaque to historians lacking the technical grasp of the equipment and its maintenance. This Panzerwaffe Vol. 2 offers a resolutely different perspective, explaining in particular the inexplicable halt of the Panzers before Dunkirk.
Drawing on primary sources, he sweeps aside the smokescreen erected by Goebbels' propaganda concealing the Achilles' heel of the mighty Panzers of the Third Reich.
