10 May 1940: the Manstein Plan launches Panzer divisions through the Ardennes. Within a few weeks the French Army, still basking in the glory of its 1918 victory, is shattered and routed in a defeat so complete that it left a lasting mark on the national consciousness, causing a profound trauma in France's historical memory.

The idea was then propagated that the German armoured force was decisively superior to that of the French and British Allies. This is false. The Wehrmacht fielded fewer tanks than they did, and only a minority of medium and heavy tanks. The first part of this work presents the equipment, the commanders and the units. It was a wholly innovative concept from the German high command — modern means such as systematic radio communications, the use of units as breakthrough and penetration forces, and air-ground coordination — that made this decisive "Blitzkrieg" possible. All these tactics allowed an essentially horse-drawn army with a limited armoured strength to win so rapidly. These tactics were copied, principally by the Americans, who employed them with far greater resources. The German victory of 1940 was the inspiration for the American victory of 1945.
