Used as a decoy by the Allies prior to Operation Overlord, the 3rd Army would enter the history books during the liberation of France — thanks in no small part to its fiery commander, General George S. Patton, and to its role as the spearhead of the Allied armies through to 1945.

Taking part in the exploitation of the Normandy breakout and the drive towards Paris, the 3rd Army subsequently ran into the Moselle and the Metz region, where it would only manage to advance after extreme effort and under near-impossible conditions. Embodiment of "mechanised cavalry" with its tactics combining speed and firepower, the 3rd Army pressed on to the borders of Czechoslovakia.

But beyond the legend born of Patton's personality, the unit would also prove one of the most formidable in the US Army — and not solely on account of its record: after the Lorraine campaign, it was the 4th Armored Division that raced towards Bastogne to relieve the American troops hard-pressed there by Operation Wacht am Rheim.
