The M4 Sherman is one of the iconic tanks of the Second World War. Making its appearance in 1942, it fought through to 1945, in Europe as in the Pacific, and even beyond, as it remained in service with certain armies long after the war.

Such a long service life, combined with mass production, means that images of the Sherman are plentiful. But while its silhouette is easily recognised, it is not always straightforward to identify the precise version one is looking at. Providing a kind of identification guide to the most common variants through plans, archive photographs and colour profiles is precisely the purpose of this booklet.

Throughout these pages, you will discover the genesis of the tank, its variants and its subsequent developments. This is obviously not an exhaustive work — such a book would run to hundreds of pages! — but rather a practical tool aimed at military history enthusiasts and scale modellers alike.
