The Tiger I is an atypical tank in many respects: together with its successor the Tiger II, it is the only heavy tank produced in significant numbers by the Third Reich. Deployed within independent battalions of both the Heer and the Waffen-SS, as well as in four elite units of these two branches of the Wehrmacht, the Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. E fought from late 1942 until the final days of the war. As a result of German propaganda and its intrinsic qualities, it was surrounded by such an aura among the Allies — both in the East and in the West — that any German tank encountered or even suspected was inevitably a Tiger, a machine representing, until proven otherwise, a deadly threat thanks to its overwhelmingly powerful armament and virtually impenetrable armour; never mind that it was most often a Panzer IV which, with its Schürzen and its long-barrelled muzzle-braked gun, did indeed look very much like one in the heat of action.
