"Achtung Jabo!" This simple warning cry in a German column could spread terror among troops lacking anti-aircraft protection against the firepower of Allied fighter-bombers appearing in the sky to drop their bombs, fire their rocket salvoes and strafe their ranks. A key element of the all-out war waged against Axis forces at the tactical level by the American, British and, to a lesser extent, Soviet air forces from 1941 to 1945, Allied fighter-bombers had a decisive impact on the course of events by inflicting severe losses on combat units of the Wehrmacht, the Japanese Army and the Regio Esercito, as well as their logistical columns immediately behind the front line, not forgetting the direct support provided to friendly ground units.

From the first RAF raids on the coast of occupied Europe to ground attacks supporting the invasion of the Reich, taking in the A-36 Apache and P-40 in the Asia-Pacific theatre and the P-39 Airacobra supplied by the Americans to Soviet aviation, Luc Vangansbeke recounts the story of these aircraft that made a decisive contribution to Allied victory during the Second World War.
