49 observation companies were dedicated to major ground units on the Northern and Eastern fronts, and 55 barrage balloon sections protected the capital, major industrial sites and communication hubs across the entire territory.

For the very first time, Bernard Palmieri details in this work the actions of these little-known units, from the peacetime years of the 1920s–30s through to wartime, covering their field operations, equipment, personnel and insignia.

With over a hundred photographs and reproduced documents, around forty insignia and approximately 8 colour profiles by Patrice Gaubert.
